The Western Highway Roundup

Western Highway Roundup Logo

Just in time for spring cleaning, the Roundup is a library sponsored hamlet-wide yardsale. Residents can register and have their home and sale on the treasure map, which will be distributed to shoppers online and in key locations. The library handles all publicity, including the advertising, signage, emails, and a Facebook fan page.

Turtle Awareness

Baby Snapping Turtle

For three weeks every spring, snapping turtles migrate to lay their eggs right in our backyard. The library would like to raise awareness of this event so that fewer snapping turtle mothers die needlessly as they cross Western Highway to lay their eggs. The babies are small and fast, and so they have an easier time when they hatch and make the trip back.

Since 2006, the Common Snapping Turtle has been recognized as the official reptile of New York State.

By following these simple guidelines, you can help:

  • Prepare to stop on Western Highway between May 17th and June 7th for turtles in the road.
  • An alternate route is available on Rt. 303
  • If you need to move a turtle, nudge them from the back sides of their shells with your foot or a shovel. If left alone and not scared, they will move on their own.
